Digital Cultural Heritage of Lower Austria – Recording of archaeological objects (CARe)

The CARe project digitizes archaeological collection objects from the Lower Austrian state collections and records them as 2D and 3D data. The aim is to make cultural heritage digitally accessible and available internationally for the public and researchers.

Within the framework of a project funded by the EU and overseen by the Austrian Federal Ministry for Culture, Media and Sport (BMKMS), a total of 3,111 objects from the collection areas of "Prehistory and Historical Archaeology" and "Roman Archaeology" were digitally recorded to contribute to the digital transformation of the Lower Austrian State Collections (LSNO). The project ran from October 2025 to April 2026 and encompassed the development of a digital infrastructure, the 3D digitization of 800 archaeologically significant collection objects using photogrammetry, and the 2D digitization and publication of 2,311 archaeological collection objects from the state of Lower Austria. The project significantly advanced the digital inventory in the field of archaeology and expanded the digital offerings on the "Lower Austrian State Collections Online" website for the public and researchers. Furthermore, the digitized materials were transferred to Kulturpool and Europeana, thus reaching a Europe-wide audience.
