nöGIG: Fiber optics for Lower Austria

The Lower Austrian Fiber Optic Infrastructure Company (nöGIG) is consistently driving forward the expansion of open, public, and future-proof fiber optic connections directly to homes (FTTH) in the rural regions of Lower Austria. The goal is to close the digital divide between urban and rural areas and create a high-performance, reliable internet infrastructure for the population and businesses.

On behalf of the State of Lower Austria, nöGIG plans, builds, and operates fiber optic networks according to the highest quality standards. The infrastructure remains predominantly in public ownership in the long term, thus making a significant contribution to digital sovereignty and an independent, crisis-proof supply.

In addition to its own extensive network expansion, nöGIG also supports municipalities in regional expansion initiatives – from planning to implementation. These municipal projects are crucial for closing the gaps in particularly challenging areas. A key role is played by the combination of federal funding and supplementary state funds from the Economic and Tourism Fund (WTF).

A significant example of this is the "Mostviertel Nord" municipal project of the Amstetten Region Municipal Service Association (GDA). Building on the already completed expansion of fiber optic connections in town centers by nöGIG in 17 municipalities, another 7,000 households in a total of 21 municipalities will now be supplied with fiber optics by 2029.

Currently, nöGIG is active in around 200 municipalities and has already installed or co-implemented over 130,000 connections according to the Lower Austrian model. The goal is largely comprehensive gigabit-capable coverage by 2030.
