Digital proximity

Digitalization and closeness – especially during the Corona pandemic, fears of new technologies could be set aside in order to maintain closeness to our fellow human beings.

Digital Technologies as an Opportunity

When it comes to digital tools in our daily work, we've become experts in using the latest technologies – especially since the COVID-19 pandemic hit. A year and a half ago, some of us nervously anticipated the next video conference, fervently hoping that the internet connection would hold up and all our devices would function as expected. Today, video conferencing and working from home are part of our daily routine and are (almost) indispensable. We try out new tools and download apps – suddenly venturing into uncharted territory and setting aside our initial reservations.

Overcoming Distances

At the same time, the distance between us and others has also increased. We tend to retreat to our own four walls, see loved ones less often than before, and when we do see them, the now fully grown "baby elephant" is our constant companion.

The kiss-kiss society, the formal handshake, and even heartfelt hugs have had to give way to emojis in messages and social distancing rules in person. Even the digitalization of physical closeness, with app developments like Kissenger, suddenly seems to have the potential to really take off. In short, the interpersonal ease and lightness on a physical level that we've known since childhood mostly only exists in partnerships and within the immediate family circle. A return to normality is only happening gradually. Crazy, on the one hand.

On the other hand, it's also an opportunity. Business trips are still largely avoided, meetings are generally attended online, and the much-discussed home office has now secured its place even after the pandemic. Flexible working allows for more efficient leisure planning. Children enjoy having their parents at home. The right balance between work and leisure allows for a slower pace of life for young and old alike.

Consciously and mindfully encountering new things

Above all, this is a time to consciously and mindfully encounter new things and to set aside any fear of contact. It's about using digital technologies where real-life interaction is no longer possible, while simultaneously maintaining closeness to our fellow human beings. It's about leveraging synergies to be there for each other despite distance and to strengthen community cohesion.
