SMEs are the backbone of the Austrian and European economy and drivers of innovation. Austria is particularly strong in the agricultural, timber and forestry, and energy sectors. These industries are essential for regional supply. Trends such as climate change and resource efficiency are shaping the future of these economic sectors. Digitalization and innovation are key for SMEs to be prepared for the future.

With a focus on sustainable digitalization for small and medium-sized enterprises throughout Austria, the goal is to promote knowledge and technology transfer for SMEs in the areas of research and development as well as digitalization. The development of digital SME champions – these are innovative, competitive, and efficient companies that drive the Austrian economy forward.

InnovATE comprises five modular programs, with each SME participating in only certain programs depending on its level of digital maturity.

• SMEs receive local support for the digital transformation of their existing business models.

• SMEs gain new ideas for applications in the areas of robotics, automation & AI (drones), smart industry & infrastructure (cybersecurity, blockchain), big data, forecasting, and simulation.

• Network partners participate in events, pitches, workshops, and seminars.

• Research institutes are provided with a framework for close collaboration with industry, including the goal of joint projects.

• Research institutions also receive reliable framework conditions for potential joint project work, bridging theory and practice.
