Everyday devices as lifesavers: Useful assistance systems in emergency situations

Smart Companion 2 is an assistance system that creates new possibilities for emergency calls. The project aims to equip everyday devices with additional functions to enable autonomous assistance requests and fall detection.

The COVID-19 pandemic presented new challenges for people living alone, as lockdowns often led to accidents and health problems being recognized late. While emergency call systems already exist that allow for proactive contact, these have their drawbacks and are frequently associated with a social stigma. Building on a previous project, Smart Companion 2 addresses this by expanding the functionality of accepted everyday devices such as robotic vacuum cleaners.

The project, originating from the St. Pölten University of Applied Sciences, is developing a prototype in a controlled testing environment. The focus is on the reliable detection of falls and the system's ability to independently request help when a person is no longer able to do so themselves. Advanced technologies such as speech interaction systems and artificial intelligence are being used in the system's development. However, the individual needs of the users remain central to all development stages.

To achieve high user acceptance, a Human-Centered Design (HCD) process is applied, incorporating principles of the "Ethics by Design" approach. This means that users are actively involved in the design process and ethical issues are comprehensively addressed. This ensures a high level of user-friendliness.

The participating project partners benefit from the research results in a variety of ways. Bosch AG can strengthen its position as a manufacturer of robotic vacuum cleaners through the project, and the St. Pölten University of Applied Sciences can use it as a starting point for international research collaborations. The House of Mercy provides ethical advice and ensures that high ethical standards are upheld. The Workers' Samaritan Federation ensures the necessary practical relevance, as they offer and maintain home emergency call systems. The Smart Companion 2 project is led by Prof. Andreas Jakl MSc thus not only creates innovative technological solutions, but also contributes to improving people's quality of life and safety.
