GIS-ELA

Use of Geographic Information Systems for Site-Specific Farming in Austria The project aims to explore the possibilities of precision farming technologies for the simple implementation of site-specific farming and to test existing technologies and, where appropriate, adapt them for the small-scale structure of Austrian agriculture.

Background

Existing precision farming solutions have been available on the market for some time, but they have not yet gained widespread acceptance, particularly in Austria. This is due, on the one hand, to a lack of economic viability resulting from small farm sizes, and on the other hand, to a lack of IT expertise among farmers.

Objectives

The project aims to develop software for the simple and straightforward creation and use of fertilizer maps based on satellite imagery.

In parallel, extensive field trials will be conducted to develop fertilizer recommendations for farmers, forming the basis for an optimal application map.

All project results will be demonstrated to users through training courses and field days, encouraging their implementation on their own farms.

Outcomes

-> Software for map creation and a smartphone app for map use

-> Manuals for proper fertilizer planning in all climate regions of Austria

-> Improved nitrogen balances for environmentally sound farming practices
