Immersive Media Lab - Combining Augmented and Virtual Reality with research on immersive storytelling

Within the framework of Big Data, narrative processes transform noise into information – every "thing" has its story. As a pioneering technology, Augmented and Virtual Reality (AVR) offers, among other things, a promising interface between industrial application and artistic research. The goal of the Immersive Media Lab is, on the one hand, to provide space and equipment for existing AVR initiatives at the St. Pölten University of Applied Sciences.

The key innovation of the Immersive Media Lab lies in combining cutting-edge technical expertise in augmented and virtual reality, the interdisciplinary development of immersive storytelling, and the application of this expertise in industry and business.

 

The five use cases implemented within this research project reflect the spectrum of creative industries, manufacturing, healthcare, and media art.

 

Immersive Video Interaction (IVI)

Evaluation of the interplay between immersion, interaction, and digital storytelling in narrative AR/VR short film formats.

 

Auditory Augmented Reality in Production (AARiP)

Further development of industrial hearing protection with an acoustic information interface and assistance system using AR/VR in conjunction with data storytelling.

 

Enlightening Patients with Augmented Reality (EPAR)

Evaluation and adaptation of information transfer using AR/VR and immersive storytelling for frequently performed examinations such as CT and MRI scans for various target groups.

 

Intermedia Motion Tracking in AR/VR (IMTA)

Construction of a 3D mesh motion capture storytelling matrix using motion capture suits and 3D scanners.

 

AR/VR Interfaces for the Industrial Internet of Things (AIIIT)

Development of a concept for communication and interaction with data from the Internet of Things using AR glasses and based on immersive storytelling.

 

This project, funded by the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG) (COIN Aufbau), started in November 2018 and ended in October 2021.
