Scribe AI ID

Automatic Scribe Identification in 12th-Century Manuscripts Using AI. In this interdisciplinary project, historians and computer scientists are collaborating on the automatic scribe identification of 12th-century manuscripts using artificial intelligence. An active machine learning approach is employed, and experts are involved to provide support. The research is based on all the manuscripts held in the Klosterneuburg Abbey Library that have now been digitized.

Lower Austria's monasteries possess extensive collections of medieval manuscripts. A more comprehensive understanding of the scribes will enable a better grasp of monastic writing in High Medieval Austria. However, there is no evidence of how many scribes worked at each monastery or whether they moved between monasteries. One way to determine these factors is to analyze the writing styles.

This project not only addresses a significant gap in historical research interactively but also creates new analytical possibilities and tools that will allow for a deeper understanding of all other medieval scriptoria in present-day Lower Austria.
