The Forest as a 3D Point Cloud

Founded in 1988, Umweltdata is a leading provider of services for remote sensing in forestry, forest inventories, and potential analysis.

In recent years, in collaboration with BOKU, TU Wien and Joanneum Research, innovative methods have been developed, new standards set, and applied in day-to-day operations. Umweltdata thus makes a significant contribution to the digitalization of forestry, particularly in the digitalization of forest stands and the monitoring of biodiversity and carbon.

From 2016 to 2020, the digitalization initiative was consistently pursued in various projects funded by the Austrian Research Promotion Agency FFG and supplemented with drone technology and terrestrial laser scanning (TLS). To enable the large-scale application of these proven methods, investments are being made in portable scanners, software for analyzing the scans, and computer hardware to handle the enormous volumes of data.
