Smart Seeding

The project developed an optical method for the automatic assessment and control of surface roughness during the sowing process between the rotary harrow and the seed drill. This results in a homogeneous work outcome under heterogeneous conditions, even at night.

Background

Soil roughness has previously only been measured in stationary field trials.

Objectives

Control of a rotary harrow using camera-based roughness measurement.

Results

System for controlling a rotary harrow using camera-based roughness measurement.

An optical roughness index is defined, and the values are calculated online. Using a TIM application, this index is adjusted to match the target value (control variable). The ground speed and rotor speed of the rotary harrow are adjusted in a control loop to achieve a consistent working result under heterogeneous conditions. Practical trials were conducted to determine the target values.
