UmBrello - Digital services for seniors

The interdisciplinary project UmBrello explores the feasibility of a communication and service platform for older people in rural areas. Its predecessor project, BRELOMATE, developed an easy-to-use and cost-effective portal for seniors. The UmBrello project now investigates which functions could be added to the platform.

Our society is undergoing a transformation. Digitalization has long since permeated almost all areas of our daily lives. Large, international providers are displacing small and medium-sized enterprises, and demographic changes are exacerbating the situation. As a result, those who are often left behind are those on the margins who, due to their age, cannot access information and communication services offered by digital media and thus can no longer rely on many essential services and goods such as local and healthcare provision, public transportation, and government services.

An easy-to-use platform aims to connect senior citizens with the regional economy, facilitate bureaucratic processes and participation for older people, and thus strengthen their integration and equality.

The platform could facilitate contact between social and medical services and family members of elderly people in assisted living facilities. Computer-assisted, human-guided training could motivate people to exercise via television. And experts could answer questions about care, hygiene, exercise, and nutrition in online Q&A sessions.
