Using 3D scans and CAD data, locomotives, train components, environments, buildings, rooms, people, and objects are captured and prepared for 3D rendering so that these spaces can later be "explored" using VR headsets. The task is to provide innovative training in these processes, simulate errors, and record the participants' reactions and motivation to repeat the experience, thus demonstrating the potential of VR.

Training on ÖBB trains is affected by the fact that the number of people who can access a train or locomotive at the same time is very limited. Any manipulation of the locomotives carries the risk of rendering parts or even the entire locomotive inoperable, requiring costly and time-consuming repairs. Therefore, the idea is to allow a larger number of employees to participate in the training while minimizing the risk of damage.

 

The goal is to create innovative training in VR environments, using the project partner as an example. By acquiring the necessary hardware (latest generation VR headsets and computers for 3D conversion of CAD and scans into VR), resources will be consolidated at a single location where various disciplines, challenges, and perspectives can be addressed. Furthermore, ideas can be transformed into innovative, application-oriented solutions, and previously unimagined new implementations, innovative future services, new testing opportunities, and new or significantly improved training programs can be explored and developed.

 

The participants should have the opportunity to make mistakes and receive feedback to ensure continuous improvement, while minimizing costs (providing large machines for training) and simultaneously minimizing risks to participants (risk of injury) from potential errors. The gamification aspect aims to provide sustained motivation, preventing the same patterns from recurring even during repeated sessions. This also involves improving the service (training) methodology through the use of innovative products.
